Abstract
For people with specific mobility problems such as the elderly, walking sticks, crippled, paralytic and the rest of wheelchair users, accessibility to an appropriate sidewalk is an important step towards a life full of opportunities, satisfaction and participation. This, therefore, necessitates a pre-design study for the assessment of crowdsourcing data focusing on information about the accessibility of urban routes accessibility for people with mobility challenges. The purpose of this study was to utilize crowdsourcing data that influence further the development of the data-driven approaches based on crowdsourcing for the enrichment of public maps with the information about the accessibility of paths and for that, help the Tanzanian government in acquiring or devising appropriate navigation tools for supporting people with mobility challenges. This study used mixed-method approach where survey questionnaire and interview were used as data collection methods. This study used a convenience sample (N = 88) of people with mobility challenges. Interviews were conducted at baseline in Mbeya city to assess challenges facing people with mobility impairment and questions for assessing possible crowdsourcing techniques that could be applicable in obtaining sidewalk accessibility information. In this study, 88 participants were enrolled. Of these, 12 were sick before the completion of the study and 4 were missing and therefore were not included in the analysis. Satisfaction with the means of assessment on suitable operation that crowd should perform in an online platform for providing sidewalks accessibility information based on sharing, the criticality rate and the comment were significantly better than the evaluating and textual. The assessment of the Condition and the Quality of the Accessibility of a Path has a range of positive outcomes including increased satisfaction to the pedestrians with mobility challenges and better quality of life. Obtaining skills and working in an accessible environment is both individually and socially very important today.
